How did your journey with Norton Rose Fulbright begin?

I came here on a vacation scheme in my second year of university. From that point, it just felt like the right place for me – the perfect balance of interesting, challenging work and a supportive environment. So when I was offered a job here, I remember that I immediately cancelled all my other interviews.

How has the firm changed during your time here?

On one hand, it’s a very different place. We’ve gone from strength to strength, and we’re now recognised as one of the global elite. However, two things haven’t changed at all – our vision and our culture.

Tell us about the progress you’ve made

After training here, I was fortunate to be made a partner in just over six years of qualification. I think this shows how merit based we are. If you’re technically good enough, if you work hard and throw yourself into life at the firm, and if the business case is there, then you really can move up quickly. The firm won’t question what age you are or what level you are. The important thing is that you’re the right person at the right time.

What value does Norton Rose Fulbright put on its trainees?

Trainees are greatly valued. We work hard to make sure they get the best experience possible, and the investment we put into their training is significant. At the end of the day, we’re looking for the partners of the future. It’s telling that many of our senior partners – including our global chief executive – started here as trainees.

Can you remember the best piece of advice you’ve been given in your career?

It was to always be open-minded and say yes to every opportunity. You never know where it might take you. If anyone had told me years ago that I would become an insurance lawyer, I probably wouldn't have believed them. Yet, when I first qualified, one of the partners in the insurance team asked me to get involved on a particular case. I said yes, and six years on, I became a partner in the insurance team. I’ve done some of the most exciting work that you can imagine, that’s taken me all over the world. The advice was definitely worth taking.
