What happens on an open day?

We will want you to properly experience our culture and our work, so you should expect:

  • a talk from one of our partners about Norton Rose Fulbright
  • application and interview advice from the trainee recruitment team
  • the opportunity to network with some of our trainees and associates
  • lunch and a tour of the office
  • interactive workshops, designed to help you to develop key skills which are essential for a legal career.

When can I apply?

We have two open days available. The first is being held in December 2015 and is for penultimate year undergraduates, finalists and graduates. You can apply from 1 November to 15 November 2015.

Our second open day will be held in April 2016 and is for undergraduates in their second year of a four year course and penultimate year undergraduates. You can apply from 1 February to 14 February 2016.

Who can apply?

2 December 2016 – penultimate year undergraduates, finalists and graduates.

14 April 2017 – penultimate year undergraduates and those in their second year of a four year course.

Vacation schemes

Who can apply for our vacation schemes?

Our winter vacation scheme is for finalists and graduates (any degree discipline). Our two summer vacation schemes are aimed at penultimate year undergraduates and finalists (any degree discipline).

If I don't do a vacation scheme with Norton Rose Fulbright, can I still apply for a training contract?

You can. We welcome applications from those who have not applied for a vacation scheme and also from those who did apply, but were not invited to an assessment day. But if you are reapplying, we expect you to have critically reviewed your application and made some updates to the content.

If you have been interviewed for a vacation scheme, but were unsuccessful at that stage, you can still apply for a training contract. However, we suggest you request feedback from the trainee recruitment team after the assessment day and also ask that you wait 12 months from the date of your original application before reapplying.

How much do you pay your vacation students?

We pay £350 per week.

When can I apply?

Applications will be open from 1 October to 30 October 2016 for our winter vacation scheme. Assessment days will be held in November 2016.

Applications will be open from 1 October 2016 to 8 January 2017 for our summer vacation schemes. Assessment days will be held in January 2017

Who can apply?

Winter vacation scheme: finalists and graduates (law and non-law).

Summer vacation schemes: penultimate year undergraduates and finalists (law and non-law).

Please note: Candidates who are studying for the two year LLB can apply for the summer vacation schemes in their first year and final year, or the winter vacation scheme in their final year. Please ensure that you include a breakdown of all academic results received from your previous undergraduate degree on your application form.

Please also note: Candidates who are studying a four year degree where your third year is abroad, should apply for a summer vacation scheme in their third year.

Do you offer ad-hoc work experience?

Unfortunately not. Due to the high level of demand for work experience, we cannot accommodate requests outside of our formal open days and vacation schemes.

Applications and assessment

Do you review applications on a rolling basis?

Yes, we review applications and invite candidates to assessment days on a rolling basis, and would encourage you to submit your applications in advance of our deadlines.

How do I apply for an open day, vacation scheme or training contract?

I am in my second year of a four year course, can I apply?

You are eligible to apply for our open day in April 2017. Applications will be open from 1 February to 14 February 2017. Further details can be found on our Open day page.

You will need to wait until you are in your penultimate year or beyond before you can apply for a summer or winter vacation scheme, or the training contract.

I am in my first year, can I apply?

First step is a week long programme exclusively for first-year undergraduates and will be held in April 2017. Applications will be open from 1 February to 28 February 2017.

You will need to wait until you are in your penultimate year or beyond before you can apply for a summer or winter vacation scheme, or the training contract.

When will I know the outcome to my application?

You will receive immediate acknowledgement of receipt of your application form by email. We screen all applications on a rolling basis, however you may experience a short delay before being invited to assessment day. If your circumstances change, we would be grateful if you could email the team on graduate.recruitment@nortonrosefulbright.com. Please note, it is not possible for the team to update applications with academics or work experience once they are submitted.

Can I have feedback on my application?

Due to the high volume of applications we receive we are unable to offer individual feedback on application forms. Our selection criteria can be found on our website so you may find it helpful to take a look at it again.

What does the assessment day include?

We hold assessment days for prospective vacation students and trainee solicitors. The assessment days vary slightly depending on the programme you are applying for, though you can expect:

  • a welcome by the trainee recruitment team
  • an interview with two senior members of the practice
  • a written exercise to assess your drafting skills
  • a negotiation exercise, assessed as part of a group so that we can see how you work in a team (training contract assessment only)
  • lunch with our current trainee solicitors and a guided tour of the office.

What do I need to bring along to my assessment day?

As well as lots of enthusiasm, you will need to bring:

  • your passport and any accompanying visas
  • receipts for travel
  • original certificates to confirm your academic achievements to date (e.g. school, university, Law School, as applicable)

How do I complete the application form if I did not study in the UK?

Please input your grades into the application form as they were awarded to you at school and/or university. You do not need to convert them into the UK equivalent, but please do include as much detail as possible.

My academic performance was affected by personal circumstances. Will you take these into account?

Yes. We encourage you to include relevant details on your application form or, if you prefer, send a confidential email to Natasha Oubridge (Trainee recruitment manager).

I need a work permit - will that be a problem?

Although we cannot guarantee it, we may be able to sponsor you to enable you to work in the UK. Please speak to us about this should you be offered a position at Norton Rose Fulbright.

If I have been unsuccessful at interview, can I reapply?

If you have attended an assessment day and were unsuccessful, we ask that you please wait 12 months from the date of your original application before reapplying. However, if you were unsuccessful at the application stage you can apply for another vacancy, within the same calendar year.

Law school

Do you mind where I study the GDL?

We require all non-law candidates who have accepted a training contract prior to starting law school to study the GDL at the following BPP locations:

  • Birmingham
  • Bristol
  • Cambridge
  • Leeds Whitehall Quay
  • Liverpool
  • London Waterloo
  • Manchester St James's Building

If you have any extenuating circumstances which may affect where you can study the GDL we will discuss this with you when you accept our offer.

Do you choose where I study the LPC?

Yes. As one of our prospective trainees, you will need to undertake the accelerated LPC at BPP University in London to prepare you for practice in the City. Together with other leading practices, we have worked with BPP London to develop an enhanced and accelerated LPC course which has been specifically tailored to the requirements of City firms. The course meets standards approved by the Solicitors’ Regulation Authority and runs for seven and a half months. Each student receives intensive guidance through face-to-face teaching and the course is designed to inspire motivation from beginning to end. There are intakes in February and August, with a period of self-study that must be completed before you start.

For the duration of the course, you will benefit from access to the Norton Rose Fulbright office, as well as presentations and social events to help you learn more about the practice. This will complement the knowledge you gain on the LPC while helping with your transition from student to trainee solicitor.

Do you provide financial assistance through Law School?

Yes, we provide financial assistance whether you are studying for your GDL or LPC. We pay course fees and a maintenance grant to successful training contract applicants. We do not, however, offer retrospective funding to students who have already commenced or completed the GDL or LPC before accepting an offer from us.

What about the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme?

If you have qualified as a lawyer outside of England and Wales and are looking to train with us, you may not need to do the LPC in order to qualify as a solicitor in England and Wales. You may be able to re-qualify under the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme (QLTS). In this instance, you would complete a period of training rather than a training contract.

Although the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) does not impose any formal experience requirements in order to re-qualify, we ask all QLTS Trainees to complete a minimum of 18 months' training, as we believe this is the minimum length of time required to gain a sufficient overview of the firm and experience in a number of practice areas before qualifying.

We will pay for all necessary QLTS examinations and training. For further information about the QLTS process please visit the SRA website.

The training contract

Can I defer my training contract start date?

We consider requests on a case-by-case basis but, usually, we are happy to defer your start date for six or twelve months. You will have the opportunity to discuss your preferences at interview or when we make you an offer. Alternatively, contact our trainee recruitment team.

Can trainees apply for a secondment?

We encourage all trainees to apply for an international or client secondment during their training contract. This is typically completed during the second year of training. The allocation of secondments is based on business need, although we do take into account individual preferences.

How many trainees do you retain on qualification?

When we hire you, we are making an investment and we aim to retain a high proportion of our trainees as associates.

What is the starting salary?

The current salary for first year trainees is £42000 rising to £47000 in the second year of training. The current salary on qualification is £70000.

What should I do if I require reasonable adjustments for the recruitment process because of a disability?

We will work with you to ensure any reasonable adjustment requirements are implemented correctly. Please contact us to discuss the adjustment(s) you require.

I have a disability, but I am not sure if or what adjustments I require. Are you able to advise me on this?

We will liaise with you to establish the most suitable adjustments required for the recruitment process and will ensure the adjustments are implemented as necessary. We have partnerships with external specialist disability organisations and can ask them for advice and guidance as required.

I am worried that if I disclose my disability this will be perceived negatively. I have had a bad experience in the past and feel it is ‘safer’ not to disclose my disability.

We have been awarded the Disability Two Ticks Symbol by Jobcentre Plus for adopting a proactive approach to employing disabled people and trying to create a more diverse workforce. We also operate the Guaranteed Interview Scheme if you meet our minimum criteria. Please note that we take a range of competencies, achievements and skills into account when making decisions on candidates and do not rely solely on academic results.
